Fish Creek Concerts Presents: Jayme Stone
Southwood United Church
May 6th
Two-time JUNO winner Jayme Stone, who's quickly become Canada's Banjo Ambassador (there's a trucker hat slogan for you...), is back in the motherland for a tour in April and May. He's a Toronto boy but he moved to Boulder, CO a few years ago and has turned into quite the star in the roots/world music community in the States and in the UK.
Aside from being a virtuoso musician, he's a pretty extraordinary guy; in spite of being totally independent he has sold thousands of albums, played venues like the Lincoln Center in New York, and got praise from all kinds of big media players like the BBC, LA Times, Boston Globe, and The Guardian.
Jayme is turning the lowly banjo into a instrument for jazz and classical music. JUNO-winning composer Andrew Downing is currently writing a banjo concerto for him.
He's also in the process of making an educational mini-doc about the banjo's West African roots and the music that came across the ocean on slave ships headed west from Senegal and Mali in the 1600s.
